So while I'm sitting here processing images (gotta love a good RAW workflow) I am still thinking about children's books.  Last night, I spent some time looking at everyone else's responses to the Vox Hunt.  I was a librarian in a former life and so we have a great collection in the house, but I saw a few that I had never seen before, and that was cool.  My five year old walked in while I had my screen up and asked why I was writing about Harold.  He has a few more suggestions for you.

Mac's Recommended Reading List for the Discriminating Preschooler:

 

We LOVE this book.  I have a pretty decent pirate voice, if I do say so myself, and this is a good book to practice it with.  The illustrations by David Shannon are fabulous.  My kids have spent hours looking at all the details.  They were pirates every day last year and this book was a big influence on that little imaginary world.

 

What can I say.  George is the coolest little monkey around.  My favorite story is the one where he paints the jungle in the neighbor's apartment.  Although when I read these now, I start humming Jack Johnson songs.  Not really a problem, just an interesting new development.

 

 

Ike LaRue is a new favorite character.  Charlotte actually has a cute little puppy dog that she carries around in her purse (please, I'm trying to pretend that there is no way she's ever seen Paris Hilton on tv, so no one remind me) and she believes that the puppy is Ike's sister.  Fifi LaRue.  Fifi speaks French but all Charlotte knows in French is "Bonjour, ma cherie" so that is where Fifi's knowledge ends as well.  So, anyway, Ike is a very intelligent dog and his letters home are hilarious.  Again, fantastic illustrations -- tons of room for kids to tell their own stories from the pictures.

 

A favorite from my childhood that my kids like too.  They can look at these over and over because there is so much going on in Scarry's illustrations.  Can you tell I'm big on that?  My favorite stories are The Polite Elephant (if you want to know where my kids learned their manners, Elephant helped a lot) and Little Bear's Bedtime Story.  My son is fascinated by the section on planes from WWI and II right now.  Charlotte loves the little one page story about the mouse who thinks his plane is crashing but is saved by Mrs. Pig's panties.  Good stuff... good stuff.

 

I would like it in a house and I would like it with a mouse.  I would like it in a chair.  Say, I would like it anywhere.  Need I say more?

We have a compilation of Harold stories and I love them. They are wonderfully clever and creative, and some of the few bedtime stories we can read over and over again without me getting sick of them.
